Cranes and Equipment

Port of Toledo Cranes/Heavy Lift Capacity: The General Cargo Facility is fitted with two gantry cranes, two mobile harbor cranes and heavy material handling equipment. The gantry cranes run along 4100 feet of rail and span two apron railroad tracks. “Big and Little Lucas” are two of the best known gantry cranes on the Great Lakes. These productive cranes can be fitted with clam buckets, spreader bars, grapples and other attachments to unload your cargo quickly and efficiently.

Mobile Harbor Cranes: Last summer, the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority acquired two new Mobile Harbor Cranes, which has increased efficiency at the Port of Toledo. The new cranes are more than twice as productive as the older equipment and are used to handle bulk, break bulk, project cargo and containers. These cranes have modernized material handling capabilities at the Port of Toledo and are the only twin cranes of this type in operation at any Great Lakes Port. Each crane stands more than 140 feet and weighs more than 240 tons. The total footprint is close to 1300 square feet and each crane has a reach of up to 130 feet. Maximum crane capacity is 84 tons per swing and each crane can turn up to 1000 tons per hour. Both cranes can work in tandem to increase maximum lift capacity.

Mantsinen RB 200: The Port of Toledo recently acquired a material handler - the largest Hydraulic Material Handler in North America - which features a unique HybriLift energy storage and recovery system that recycles the energy used to lift loads reducing the amount of fuel consumed by as much as 35% when compared to traditional systems. The Mantsinen gantry allows railcars and trucks to pass through between the machine's legs, allowing very efficient direct vessel to truck/train loading.

Little Lucas: Clyde Iron Works Whirley Model 24-DE: Rated to place 51.5 short tons into the center of the hatch of a typical Seaway ship, and a 72.5 short ton load onto its deck. It is also designed for high speed Bucket, Grapple, and Magnet work.

Big Lucas: American Hoist & Derrick Model 254 Revolver: Rated to place 75 short tons into the center of the hatch of a typical Seaway ship, and 110 short ton load onto its deck. It is also designed for high speed Bucket, Grapple, and Magnet work.
