Northern Europe: The lion’s share of The Port of Toledo’s direct overseas trade has historically been with North Europe. The countries in this region remain important trading partners with Toledo for steel products, grain, fertilizer and other commodities. Even though the Port of Toledo is located 500 miles inland, in many cases the ports in Northern Europe are closer in nautical miles to Toledo than they are to coastal U.S. ports (see chart below).
In July 2006, HWY H2O signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Seaports of Niedersachsen, establishing a marketing alliance between the two groups. The purpose of the agreement is to promote trade between northern Europe and the Great Lakes / St. Lawrence Seaway System, generate business opportunities through joint marketing, and to encourage an exchange of information.
